Day 8 - Reflection
2:20 PM
Tuesday, March 18, 2008
Today we had to finished up on our portfolio and do some discussion regarding ethics and internet.

We have to include:
1)the comparison and analysis of search facilities
2)evaluation of internet resources
3)blog reflections(this will be the last post)
4)group wiki summary
5)group bibliography.

I have completed the first two. I'm writing my last reflection now to finish up number 3. All that is left is the last two which I have to wait for my other group members. Since I have done my part, I have got nothing to do. I'm watching Liar Game on Youtube right now while others are still doing their portfolio.

Of course, this also meant that I also have done the discussion topic. Regarding ethics and internet, I feel that we are allowed to use fake identity if we're just chatting away with unknown people because we never know whether the other party is even being honest with us regarding his/her identity. So I guess its fair. However, I think using another's identity is definitely wrong. In case something bad happen, the one who gets in trouble will be the person and not us.

Since this is the last post, I'll reflect a little bit for the whole UIR lesson. What I learned the most is the evaluation of internet resources. When finding information, we have to make sure the information is accurate or whether it is credible. One way to find this out is by finding out the sources of the information, who is the author, whether he is an expert or a researcher or a jounalist. The currency is also important. I actually feel that this criteria is actually common sense but sometimes we forgot to evaluate the internet resource because sometimes when doing project work, the deadline is too soon and we don't have much time to do research properly so we kind of skip the evaluation part and just take the information. I also learned the citation format-APA style. Before this, I know that citation is important but I did not know the format of citation. These are pretty much what I learned the most.

Day 7 - Reflection
8:17 PM
Monday, March 17, 2008
For day 7,
we discussed about Youtube. We talk about what it is, its usage, significance, flaws, and future. We discussed using the World Cafe format although there is nothing much about it because there are only 2 groups. From listening to everyone's views about Youtube, I learned that not everybody use Youtube for entertainment purposes like for example, me. I use Youtube to watch animes. Others use Youtube to learn new things like maybe dance steps, martial arts. One thing that I don't like about Youtube is that there is a limitation when uploading videos. You can only upload videos withing 100 mb and 10 mins. You may think it does not affect me because I don't upload videos but it does affect me. Animes that are uploaded are uploaded in many parts because of the limitations and so when I want to watch animes, I have to open up all the parts first for smooth watching.

Next we talk about TalkingCock.com. As a Singaporean, I find it really amusing. There are non-stop humour. There are a few things that I frown on upon. That is the usage of language and their jokes. The strong language that the site use is a bad influence to children and their jokes can sometimes be racist. But I had a good laugh when reading the website.

Day 6 - Reflection
2:15 PM
Sunday, March 16, 2008
The test was actually easy today but I got quite a few wrongs because I forgot.

So today we finished off our reports and evaluation of internet resources and then afterwards we engage in a discussion forum. The topic for the discussion was how Internet has enriched our academic life and what we thought of advocacy websites.
My thoughts are that Internet really serves us well in providing information that we want efficiently unlike the alternative method where we need to look through books to get informations.

I've never really known much about advocacy websites so I learned new things from the discussion like there are advocacy websites that influence people regarding terror.

Day 5 - Reflection(E-learning)
9:05 PM
Friday, March 14, 2008
Today is E-learning day. There is no need for us to come for class but we still have some work to do. The work is posting a summary of our research findings into Wetpaint. Through this activity, I learned that wiki is a place where anyone can contribute their information. When i say anyone, I really meant anyone. Although you still have to sign-in in order to post something but when you are signed-in, not only can you add information but you can also edit, delete information that have been added by other users.

Update (March 18): I was pissed of with this system where anyone can add, edit and delete information. I had edited and added more information to my short summary to become quite long and I have already succesfully posted it yesterday, March 17. Somehow for some reason, this morning when I checked the site, all my editing was gone. My section was totally reverted back to the short summary it was before editing. Luckily, there was a saved file of my editing. I went to editing history section and there I found my edited version. This saves the trouble of rewriting.

Day 4 - Reflection
7:36 AM
Wednesday, March 12, 2008
Today, Ms Faridah commented on our blog one by one. As I expected, she said what I wrote in my blog is straight forward and I should put in more reflective words. I am a straight forward kind of guy. Actually this is kind of half true because my straight forward personality takes control of me when it comes to writing. When it comes to talking, I usually beat around the bush before I get to the part that I wanted to say.

Anyway let's get to what we did today. We learned to evaluate Internet Resources. It was kind of easy as we just had to follow a template and answer the question written there. The template had the follong criteria:

Purpose
Coverage
Authority
Accuracy
Currency
Accessibility
Presentation and Arrangement
Usability
Overall

It was easy for me as I found the appropriate website which is BBC News. All the answers required can be found easily. For the others, they have not yet found the appropriate website. So I kind of finished the whole worksheet by lunch time which I ended up with nothing much to do for the 1 hour 30 mins after lunch. After lunch I was like staring at the computer screen thinking what to do. I found my answer soon enough. I kind of did two things at once. I improved on my report and read mangas at the same time. People who wants to read mangas online can do so at the following website - onemanga.com .

During the lecture I had fun when we discussed about useless information. There's a few site that had nothing in them. One example is this one. It says 'there is nothing here'

If you click the word 'here' you will get this. See the highlighted words. It says 'told you'

Day 3 - Reflection
2:29 PM
Monday, March 10, 2008
Today I learned about the different types of Internet search facilites. They are Search engines, Meta search engines, Subject directories, and Databases. However, the lesson did not touch on much about databases.

For practical, we had to find 3 resources using 3 different search facilities which are Search engines, Meta search engines, and Subject directories. What I use are :

1) Search engine : Google
2) Meta search engine : Metacrawler
3)Subject directorie : Yahoo Directory

Comparing the 3 search facilities, When I find resources for my research topic, I found out that :

Search engines shows the most number of search results(14,700,000 hits) and the percentage of relevance is high.

Meta search engines shows the least amount of search results(78 hits) but i was able to find one site which contains information relevant to my topic.

Subject directories (100 hits) on the other hand did not have any search results that is of any relevance to my research topic.

Based on the above comparison, Google search engine has best meet my searching needs. It has the most number of hits and i found 3 site which are relevant to my research topic. My topic is the 'impact of blogging on businesses'. I'm not fond of subject directories. Seriously, I can't find a single site that got anything to do with ' business and blogging'. I do found results about 'business' though, but 'business and blogging'? None at all.

Day 2 - Reflection
3:31 PM
Sunday, March 9, 2008
In Lecture 3,
I've learned about the different purposes of Internet resources. How to identify them and compare the different types.I think Information is the basic purpose of Internet resources. (Everytime we use the internet and go to any websites, we are actually viewing the infos that are in the website.)Other than Information, I've also learned some other types of purposes as well such as :

Advocacy
Business/Marketing
Entertainment
Personal
News

Personally, I think the type of purpose that is easy to identify is 'Personal' and 'News'. Why? Well, like DUH. 'Personal' is written by one person only and information provided is more to topics regarding the person's interest. An example is this blog of mine. The only topic that I covered is related to my "Using the Internet as a Research Tool" subject. For 'News', the information is just... News! You can go to this link to check out an example of News website. http://news.bbc.co.uk/

For the other types of purpose, I think I can manage to identify them if I come across any of them but it'll take a while before I can straight away point them out.

Day 2 - If I Have $500 (Activity)
9:24 AM
Friday, March 7, 2008
If I have $500, I would buy:

from eBay
1) Final Fantasy XII 2 DVD 1-13(complete in Eng) - $19.90

from Yahoo auction
2)XBOX 360: Kingdom Under Fire: Circle of Doom - $6.50
3)XBOX 360: Burnout Paradise - $6.50
4)XBOX 360: Topspin 2 - $49.90
5)XBOX 360: Devil May Cry - $6.50

This is the only thing that I want to buy currently. You can see alot of games right?(I'm a gamer. what else do you expect?) Total cost is like $100 plus or so.
So in the end I will have like $300-$400 left. $500 is a lot to me. I don't even know what to spend on. I think I would rather give the rest to charity.

Day 1 - Introduction, Reflection

INTRODUCTION

Hi. This is my first post for the UIR Blog. So I'll be introducing myself. My name is Nur Azizul Hakim Bin Prayitno. You can call me Azizul or Zul. Both is just fine. I'm enrolled in the diploma course Game & Entertainment Technology. As you may have guess, I am an avid gamer. I've stopped playing computer games because my computer is at the brink of death.(My PC will hang or shut down when I play any games). I owned a XBOX 360. Games I like best are Halo, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Ninja Gaiden. As much as I like playing games, I like spending my free time on my hobby which is drawing. I can draw what I see very well. In other words, I can't draw something out of my own imagination(This sucks. I hate myself because of this). What I always draw are anime characters, well mostly females(what else do you expect from a healthy guy). Rest assured, they are not obscene pictures. That is all.

REFLECTION

Honestly, I have always thought that blogs are just personal diaries kind of thing where you write stuffs like: what you have done, seen, heard, and felt on that day. Through the first day of UIR, I realised I was wrong. Through blogs, you can also write about other topics like politics, news and articles.

Lecture 1,Practical 1

Through lecture 1, I have learned quite a lot of the different categories of Internet Information that I have not known of like electronic journals, discussion forums, newsgroups, mailing list and many more. As for the research topic for the portfolio, I chose to research on the 'Impact of blogging on businesses'. Why I have chosen these topic is that since we have to manage our own blog for the 9-day of UIR, why not I use this topic to help me further understand the uses of blog.

Lecture 2,Practical 2

Through lecture 2 , I have learned about 3 categories of website : Organisational, personal, and subject-based. Through the practical itself, I have slowly learned how to identify these 3 categories. Through the lecture, I have also learned how to cite websites, articles, and database articles using APA style. I have always known that we should acknowledge the source of information but I did not think it is that important. However, through lecture 2, I have fully understand the importance of citation and the seriousness of plagiarism.

As a whole, I have always thought that I have known most there is to know about the Internet. However, there is much more to learn regarding the Internet. For example, before today, I have not known about the different categories of Internet Information, the 3 categories of website, and the importance of citation. Internet is part of technology and since technology is constantly changing and improving, I feel that we can never learn everything about Internet. I had fun on the first day, I look forward to the rest of the 8-days.
